Beginning a brutal closing stretch to this season, Tennessee basketball visits the Auburn Tigers. Here is our preview for the Volunteers.

After holding off the Vanderbilt Commodores earlier this week, Tennessee basketball begins its tough run to end the season on Saturday. The Vols are set to play their first of two games against the No. 13 ranked Auburn Tigers, this one being on the road.

At 15-11 and 7-6 in the SEC, Rocky Top is trying to put together a strong finish against a tough schedule to boost its NCAA Tournament resume. Visiting the team lead by former UT coach Bruce Pearl is a perfect way to start that off.

This is the sixth game against an opponent ranked in the top 25 for Rick Barnes’ team when they played that team. It’s their third game against a team currently in the top 25. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

Last Saturday, the Vols suffered a heartbreaker on the road against the South Carolina Gamecocks due to a last-minute collapse. They then suffered another near-collapse Tuesday against Vanderbilt, leading by 13 with two and a half minutes left and then by 10 with 35 seconds left only to win by two. So they need to start improving their ability to close out games.

Auburn comes in with a 22-4 record and 9-4 SEC record. However, they are on a two-game losing streak, having lost on the road to the Missouri Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs. They are looking to get back on track in their return home today.

Over the past couple years, Pearl has made Auburn a thorn in the Vols’ side. The Tigers cost the Vols an outright SEC regular season title in 2018 by beating them in Knoxville. Then they cost the Vols a share of the SEC title in 2019 by beating them on the last day of the regular season. Less than a month later, they beat the Vols in the SEC Tournament Championship game.

Simply put, the Tigers have been giving UT lots of trouble. Now, with Auburn thinking big, the Vols have a chance to return the favor, and it could start with a win here. However, such a win would be a shocking outcome.

After this game, Tennessee basketball has a rematch with the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road and then hosts the Florida Gators next Saturday. Then they have a rematch against the Kentucky Wildcats, in Lexington, before closing the regular season out by hosting this same Auburn team.
