Tennessee football: Five needs for Vols to address in 2021 recruiting class

5. Wide Receiver

After losing Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway, Jeremy Pruitt did a great job restocking Tennessee football at the wide receiver position for 2020. Along with Josh Palmer set to return as a senior, Pruitt made sure to redshirt Brandon Johnson, brought in graduate transfer Velus Jones Jr. from the USC Trojans and also secured transfer Miles Jones from the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

There’s just one problem. Palmer, Johnson and Velus Jones will all be gone after 2020. Still, Miles Jones will be back, and Pruitt secured three four-star receivers plus two athletes who could play receiver. Add in Ramel Keyton, and he should have enough in the tank. However, none of those guys beyond Keyton has proven themselves even in the slightest yet.

As a result, Pruitt is going to have to restock the roster once again next year at this position. He has secured a four-star commitment and a couple of athletes who could play the position as of this post right now, but as we already said, we can’t count that when looking at the needs right now since nobody is even close to signing yet.

Pruitt, Jim Chaney and the rest of the staff need to spend a lot of time continuing to shore up their skill positions going forward. Wide receiver is a position where you need lots of commitments to find the guys who fit into your rotation, and there are only about six guys, only one of whom is proven right now set to be on the roster for 2021.
