Tennessee football: 10 major revelations from Vols start of spring practice
2. Early enrollee athlete Jimmy Holiday is starting out at quarterback.
Of their four early enrollees, the Vols had one athlete. That athlete was Jimmy Holiday, who also just happened to be the only player among the early enrollees who was not a four-star or five-star. However, Holiday brings a lot of hype with him, as he was a speedster in high school and comes in as a guy who could be a dual-threat quarterback, wide receiver or defensive back.
Well, among those positions, it looks like the 6’0″ 196-pound prospect from Mississippi will start things off at quarterback. This is interesting because that is one position where Jeremy Pruitt probably doesn’t need to go much deeper, and Holiday could fill a void that truly does exist at wide receiver and at defensive back. But he’s not starting at either spot.
Beyond that, Jim Chaney appears to have a preference for pro-style quarterbacks with big arms, including another guy who was an early enrollee in this class, five-star Harrison Bailey. Holiday starting things out at quarterback means there are six signal-callers there to start out the spring who have a shot at actually seeing action this year.
There is the belief that Holiday would have been a four-star if he had just focused on one position, so maybe the Vols were smart to start him at quarterback. However, keep an eye on what happens to him throughout the spring, as he could move around to different spots over the next month. Pruitt may give him a look at all three spots, but him starting at quarterback is intriguing.
