7. Women’s Indoor Track and Field

While the future looked bright for the women’s outdoor track and field program, the women’s indoor track and field program had actually finished this season appearing to show a bit of regression. Last year, they finished tied for No. 21 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings. This year, the season ended with them at No. 27.

At the time the season had ended, the women had just finished No. 8 at the SEC Championships. NCAA Indoor Championships were set for this past weekend before the coronavirus outbreak canceled everything. Now, one thing that hurt the Tennessee Vols track and field program was the number of players who actually qualified for indoor championships.

There were four women overall who were set to compete: Latavia Maines, Alonie Sutton, Alexis Duncan and Domonique Turner. Two of them were seniors, which hurt even worse, and all of them would have had the chance to be very effective. The productivity to this point was enough for us to put this sport in the top half of the sports hurt by what happened.

Now, each of them was only going to compete in one event, and with two of them competing in the same event, only three events would be represented by Rocky Top on the women’s side. However, they still had a solid program that could easily have shot up the rankings with a strong performance at NCAAs, and the fact that it was canceled right before makes this devastating.
