Ranking Tennessee Vols sports worst affected by coronavirus ending season
3. Men’s Indoor Track and Field
But what’s clear is that the Tennessee Vols men’s program was rolling when it came to indoor track and field. As a result, this is far and away the program that took the biggest hit on the track and field front with the coronavirus outbreak cancelling all NCAA events. Just like the women’s side, NCAA national championships was set to begin, and this ruined evertything.
Men’s indoor track and field finished No. 10 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, and although that was only fourth among SEC teams, they still had a lot to play for. By coming in fifth at SEC Championships, this program was set to make a strong showing at NCAAs, and the way everything played out really hurt them.
Now, while the women had four athletes going to NCAAs and the men only had three, the men and women were competing in the same events. That’s because sophomore Carey McLeod would be competing two events: in the long jump and the triple jump. He would be the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in those events respectively as well, which is a big deal.
Beyond McLeod’s chance to become a superstar, seniors Darryl Sullivan and Joseph Maxwell were set to compete at NCAA National Championships. The combination of losing three guys and having one guy who could put the program in contention for the Indoor National Championship was enough for us to say this sport took a devastating hit. Being in the top 10 also hurt.
