Ranking Tennessee Vols sports worst affected by coronavirus ending season
14. Women’s Golf
After strong performances in the fall, the Tennessee Vols appeared to have a women’s golf programed destined to do big things when it picked back up this semester. However, that was not the case in any of its events, and as a result, we have to say that the cancellation of the season didn’t mean much for this program, which was coming apart.
To open things up at the IJGA Collegiate Invitational, this group finished in last place out of 14 teams, shooting 35-over par. Now, they rebounded at the Westbrook Invitational, finishing No. 5 out of 16 teams while shooting 13-under par. But then they went down again at the Florida Gators Invitational, finishing No. 7 out of 12 teams while shooting 64-over par.
As things were suspended, the program was ranked No. 54 nationally. That was good for 12th place among the 14 SEC schools. Simply put, the program was reeling, and it was not the team that made it to NCAA Championships in May last year. Now, maybe they could have turned things around, but the horrendous start to this semester told a different story.
Up next for women’s golf was supposed to be the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, hosted by the University of Georgia at the University of Georgia Golf Club in Athens, Ga. from March 20 through March 22. Then there was the Evans Derby Experience hosted by the Auburn Tigers March 27-29 at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala. before SEC play. None of that will happen now.
