We don’t know what to make of the Tennessee Lady Vols softball program. Traditionally, this would be at or near the top of the list among Tennessee Vols spring and winter sports, as Ralph and Karen Weekly have built a powerhouse program. However, that wasn’t the case early on in this season, and it’s why we have them down here.

When things ended, the program was 14-9. However, part of that was an event in which they lost four straight in late February, twice to the UFC Knights and twice to the South Florida Bulls at the Tampa Tournament. They responded, however, by winning four of five in the Tennessee Invitational, including a huge win over the Stanford Cardinal to win that event overall.

After a close loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels, the season was canceled. We don’t know what type of rhythm Rocky Top would have gotten on after that, but it’s clear they were looking much better than they did when on that losing streak earlier in the year. They were even receiving votes in the ESPN top 25 once again.

Still, being unranked and that awful stretch has this program down here for now. They didn’t do enough to offset it, and cancelling things may have saved a bad season. We would have known more soon enough, though, as the first SEC series was set for the weekend, at the Texas A&M Aggies, before the NCAA canceled play. So this still was a brutal ending for them.
