Ranking Tennessee Vols sports worst affected by coronavirus ending season
10. Rowing
Despite the Tennessee Vols having a Lady Vols rowing program for decades, it is relatively new to the varsity field. In fact, it’s so new that it doesn’t actually compete in the SEC. It competes in the Big 12. Regardless, the program is one on the rise, and this was going to be a year in which it proved just how effective it could be at the varsity level. So ending the season hurt.
The year was set to start one day after everything was suspended, at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, Tenn. It was going to last for two days, and then in a week it would take part in an event at the Alabama Crimson Tide. We don’t know how things would have gone, but we know that the coronavirus outbreak hit them at the worst time along with multiple other sports.
Anyway, out of seven teams in the Big 12 last year, UT came in sixth place overall in Big 12 Championships. It was a bad showing, and this was for a program that hosted the event. As a result, the evidence was clear that this team had a lot of work to do to take the next step, but it appeared that this would be the season they were able to do it.
Shockingly, the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll heading into the season actually had the program receiving a vote in the rankings. Now, that’s only fifth in the Big 12, which also has the Alabama Crimson Tide in it, but it’s still something. As a result, decent projections puts this program a bit higher than others on the list, but it’s still at the bottom.
