Tennessee loses 66-60

Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019

While the Tennessee Lady Vols lost to the LSU Tigers in their first realistic chance at a quality victory during that five-game losing streak, their first overall realistic chance at a quality victory was back in December. At the time of this game, UT was 7-0 and flirting with the top 10 under first-year head coach Kellie Harper. Momentum was incredibly high at the time.

They seemingly had a quality win at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but Notre Dame turned out to be terrible. So this Texas matchup, a team that turned out to be very good, as they finished in the top 50 of the RPI, was the first chance for Harper and co. to get a big win. The loss, given what Texas turned out to be, became more heartbreaking as the season went on.

In a back and forth game, UT’s offense went cold in the second half. However, their defense kept them in it, and they took a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter. But they only scored 11 points in the fourth overall, and Texas found its rhythm to pull away for a huge 66-60 win. It was Rocky Top’s first loss of the season under Harper.

Rennia Davis did her part, leading the way with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Jazmine Massengill added another 10 points. But the team as a whole missed eight free throws and allowed Texas to dictate the flow of the game. It’s one of many they let slip away.
