2. At No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats

Tennessee loses 80-76

Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020

No game was a bigger opportunity for the Tennessee Lady Vols to steal one on the road than the Kentucky Wildcats during the regular season. After being beaten down later in the year, UT was blown out by them in the SEC Tournament. But they really did let this one get away from them early on, and give how things played out, the loss further proved devastating.

At the time of the game, Rocky Top was 11-2 and 1-0 in SEC play. They were ranked No. 22, and Kentucky was ranked No. 13. This would be a real test for both teams. UT dominated the second quarter to go into halftime with a two-point lead, but Kentucky dominated the third quarter. As a result, the Wildcats led by five entering the fourth.

Then, in the fourth, a shootout came. The Lady Vols’ offense came alive, scoring 30 points overall. However, Kentucky was red-hot as well, which is why they built a 72-60 lead with under four minutes to go. In a furious comeback, though, Tennessee went on an 8-0 run to cut it to 72-68. Then, down 76-72 with 47 seconds left, they had the chance to cut it to two.

However, that’s when their offense finally stalled. They couldn’t score, and and Rhyne Howard hit four free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Rennia Davis was the star with 27 points and six rebounds, doing her part, and Rae Burrell added 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks off the bench. Jordan Horston also had 13 points and nine assists. But it wasn’t enough.
