2. LSU Tigers

Tennessee wins 63-58

Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020

On paper, the Tennessee Lady Vols’ win over the LSU Tigers is by far their most impressive of the year. We’ll get to why there’s another game at No. 1 when we get to that game. However, it’s also worth noting that this game was not one worth celebrating, as news of Kobe Bryant’s death broke while it was going on, which was shocking to everybody.

At the time, UT had just suffered a 15-point loss on the road in its rekindled rivalry with the UConn Huskies. They were looking for a rebound and returning home against a top 50 RPI team that was 14-4 and 4-2 in the SEC at the time. LSU would finish the year with 20 wins, so it was clear that they were an impressive opponent and a great SEC test for Kellie Harper’s first team.

The game was extremely close in the first half, but Rocky Top appeared to take control in the second quarter, going up by nine at one point and leading by eight heading into the fourth. LSU fought back, though, and made it close late. Key free throws by Rennia Davis, three defensive stops and a key offensive rebound by Jordan Horston allowed this team to hold on.

In its 63-58 win, Tennessee was led once again by Davis, who had an amazing 30 points, eight rebounds and four steals. She was the only player to score in double-figures, hitting all 10 free throw attempts and two-of-five three-pointers. Honestly, Davis single-handedly won this game.
