Tennessee football: Updated ranking of Vols 10 assistant coaches for 2020 season
This is no knock on Shelton Felton. He simply has no real resume to speak of for us to put him above last place on here. He’s the least proven guy on this list, at least at the college level. Felton rejoins Tennessee football, where he was a quality control coach under Jeremy Pruitt in 2018, after spending 2019 as the Akron Zips’ outside linebackers coach.
That year, Akron went 0-12. Now, Felton was one of the most positive coaching aspects of Tom Arth’s staff, as he helped develop the one First-Team All-MAC player, John Lako. But the fact of the matter is Felton has been at three different colleges in three years, as he was with Arth’s Chattanooga Mocs staff in 2017.
In those three years, he has yet to be part of a winning season, although all three times he was with a first-year head coach. But let’s focus on the real story. Pruitt hired Felton for his experience in the high school ranks. And to be fair to Felton, that success is through the roof. It’s a big reason to believe in him.
However, at this moment, his hiring is solely based on potential. We have seen some of what he can do, and Pruitt has seen more, but there is nothing on his resume to be able to put him above No. 10 on this list for now.
