Tennessee football: Updated ranking of Vols 10 assistant coaches for 2020 season
In terms of experience, Brian Niedermeyer should be one of the bottom two people on this list. He’s never coached on the defensive side of the ball at this level in an on-field role, and his track record producing quality production from tight ends wasn’t even that good. Those things are why we do have him low on this list of Tennessee football assistants.
However, there’s no way to ignore his recruiting success. Niedermeyer was named National Recruiter of the Year in 2019, and he followed that up by being highly instrumental in the Vols securing their first top 10 class since 2015 back in February. His success on the recruiting trail alone is able to carry him.
On top of that, though, he does have some familiarity with defense, as he worked with Jeremy Pruitt at the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs focusing on that side of the ball in off-field roles. That should give him somewhat of a benefit heading into this year, which will be his first actually coaching inside linebackers.
Still, the only thing really keeping him from the bottom of this list is recruiting. That’s the biggest reason he is so crucial to the staff. Rocky Top desperately needs him given what he’s able to do on the trail, and if the inside linebackers produce this year after the departure of Daniel Bituli, he could shoot up this list.
