Dominick Wood-Anderson wasn’t the biggest story of a Tennessee football player landing with the Seattle Seahawks, and given the success Justin Coleman had there, this seems to be one of the franchises willing to give a fair shake to undrafted Vols. Add in Wood-Anderson’s size at 6’4″ 261 pounds, and he has a great chance to surprise some people.
However, the guy is going to a position the Seahawks loaded up on in the offseason. This wasn’t considered a major position of need for Seattle, even after the injury to Will Dissly, as they also have Greg Olsen there. Add in Jacob Hollister, who may be a rising star, and this team already had options at the position.
Then there is what they did in the draft. The Seahawks selected two tight ends, Colby Parkinson of the Stanford Cardinal and Stephen Sullivan of the LSU Tigers, with the fourth and seventh picks respectively. Signing Wood-Anderson makes the competition for a spot extreme, and they aren’t as invested in Wood-Anderson since they didn’t draft him.
The best that could be said is the fact that this franchise is clearly allowing for open competition at the position, meaning they are likely to give everybody a fair shake. That wouldn’t be the case in other spots. However, Wood-Anderson has a major mountain to climb if he’s going to make the roster. It won’t be easy.
