Former Tennessee Vols punter Dustin Colquitt leaving the Kansas City Chiefs after 15 years leads our Volunteers news for Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

The NFL Draft may be over, but former Tennessee Vols players in the pros continue to make news. That is happening against the backdrop against Jeremy Pruitt continuing to secure future pro players with elite prospects committing to him.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with a developing surrounding a former UT player who is a veteran in the pros. This represents the end of an era, and it’s one worthy of coverage on its own. You could say it had a happy ending, however.

Anyway, beyond that, there is still men’s basketball news, as Yves Pons declared for the NBA Draft over the weekend. We have more coverage of the effect that will have. Finally, we’ve got another episode of “The Slice” to talk about. Let’s begin with the former Vol.

Dustin Colquitt and Kansas City Chiefs parting ways – Instagram

After 15 years as the Kansas City Chiefs and coming off a Super Bowl win, former Tennessee Vols football All-American punter Dustin Colquitt revealed on his Instagram page that he is saying goodbye to the franchise. Based on the context of what he was saying, it appears the Chiefs are releasing him. Here’s a bit of what he wrote.

"“I was a young kid when I first walked into Arrowhead…hell, the indoor facility used to be 70 yards. Holding this post for 15 years has been an honor that I never took for granted.”"

Trey Smith featured on “The Slice” podcast – UTSports

Rising Tennessee football senior offensive lineman Trey Smith was the guest on this week’s “The Slice” podcast. Smith talked about his decision to return for his senior season, which he called a “no-brainer.” Here’s a bit of what he said.

"“One thing a lot of people kept asking me ‘are you going to be happy staying at Tennessee and doing the things a college kid would do that you wouldn’t have to do in the NFL?.’ My answer was simple – that’s all I know. Why would I not be OK with that? I love Knoxville. Man, I love the city. I love the bike trails. It’s a beautiful city. I love riding next to the river. I love the fans. I love playing in Neyland Stadium, and I always dreamt of playing SEC ball.”"

Rob Lewis talks Yves Pons – WVLT

Volquest reporter Rob Lewis went on WVLT to talk about the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team and the news over the weekend that Yves Pons is declaring for the NBA Draft. Lewis said he expects Pons to do what Admiral Schofield did and return for his senior year after getting feedback fro scouts. Here’s a bit of what else he said.

"“What’s going to be attractive to NBA types is the fact that he is going to be able to guard multiple positions. You can play him in a number of different scenarios, play him with different combinations of players, he gives you a lot of flexibility, but I think, in talking with some people, the feedback he’s going to get is that he needs to be a little bit more polished offensively.”"
