839. Pick Analysis. Defensive Lineman. Senior. LaTrell Bumphus. player. Scouting Report. 8

Given the fact that Jeremy Pruitt only has one true defensive end spot in his 3-4 scheme, it’s actually a bit of a paradox to have two people who play that role on here. However, while Matthew Butler was the most consistent player for Tennessee football in that role, LaTrell Bumphus actually showed the most potential.

After moving around to many positions, Pruitt switch Bumphus from tight end to defensive end. He was learning the system on the fly last year, and down the stretch of the season, he became an elite playmaker. Bumphus had nine solo tackles and four tackles for a loss after the Vols’ 1-4 start, and he finished with six tackles for a loss overall, leading all defensive linemen, and two sacks.

If he takes the same type of leap this year, he could become the feature lineman on the edge for the Vols, which would be a huge deal. It’s likely Jeremy Pruitt still rotates Butler and Bumphus, and with more development, both guys should be able to stand out.

It’s also worth noting that all the positives applying to Bumphus would also apply to Butler in terms of the interior line being improved and more experienced, freeing them up to make more big plays. Like Butler, he has a versatile frame to allow him room inside as well, as he is already listed at  6’3″ 286 pounds. Scouts will love that.
