Tennessee football: Top 10 Vols with 2021 NFL Draft potential
Which Jarrett Guarantano shows up next year? Is it the guy who played horrible through Tennessee football’s first four games or the guy who was amazing off the bench down the stretch of the season? You could just decide whether or not the Guarantano of the first three quarters or the Guarantano in the fourth quarter in the Gator Bowl win over the Indiana Hoosiers shows up.
The guy is Jekyll and Hyde, and that does work against him, as it’s evident of his confidence and mentality not always being there. Intangibles are crucial for a quarterback at the next level. However, Guarantano has a solid arm, he knows how to take hits in the pocket, and with his 415-yard game against the Missouri Tigers, he can definitely produce.
Another year in Jim Chaney’s offense is likely to work wonders for Guarantano. Remember, this is his first year since arriving at UT in 2016 that he is playing under the same offensive coordinator for two years in a row. The guy still completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,158 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions last year.
What stood out for Guarantano is an 8-point drop in completion percentage off play-action. That involves getting used to Chaney’s designed plays, so if he gets back to his 2018 levels there, everything else should improve dramatically. Combine that with his 6’4″ 213-pound frame, and he can be a very solid pro prospect.
