Tennessee Volunteers win 75-70

SEC regular season game (O’Connell Center; Gainesville, Fla.)

A mark of the Cuonzo Martin era was Tennessee basketball always emerging late in the season after a slow start. But it always made sense. In his second and third years, he had to adjust to losing his leading scorers to season-ending injuries early on. This year, his team had to adjust to his defensive coaching style, and he didn’t get Jarnell Stokes until mid-January.

Well, by the time this game had arrived, his team had found its stride despite a 3-6 start and 2-5 start in SEC play. UT was back to .500 and had beaten the Gators in Knoxville earlier in the year. But this game was the highlight of the season.

The defending SEC Champions who made the Elite Eight the year before were heavy favorites, but Jerronne Maymon went off with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Trae Golden did his part as well with 17 points and seven assists while hitting nine of 11 free throws. Skylar McBee hit four threes and scored 13, and Jordan McRae added 12 off the bench.

In the process, Rocky Top dominated, jumping out to a 41-30 halftime lead and holding on for a 75-70 win over a top 10 team on the road. As a result, they completed a sweep of Florida in the regular season, and they won eight of their final nine regular season games overall to finish second only to the eventual national champion Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC standings.
