Tennessee basketball’s top five players who won the most
- Charles Hathaway played 96-97, redshirted 97-98
If we’re going to include Isiah Victor on this list, we have to include Tony Harris. He was part of the same class as Victor, meaning they had the same level of success. To be fair, Charles Hathaway was also there during those four years, but he also played in 1996-1997, when the team had a losing record, and he took a redshirt in 1997-1998. That’s why he didn’t make the list.
Harris was the prized recruit for Kevin O’Neil, allowing Jerry Green to walk into such a good situation. Getting him out of Memphis also played a huge role in the Memphis Tigers getting rid of Larry Finch, and he was a huge reason that Tennessee basketball had high expectations when Green immediately walked into the program.
The reason we have Harris over Victor is because Harris was a four-year starter as opposed to two. He was the floor general of those teams and was also an elite three-point shooter, which helped him average double figures all four years.
Of course, Harris and Victor are ironically considered part of a group that dramatically underachieved, particularly in 2000-2001. However, Harris was injured for part of that year, and Green did not manage outside pressure well. As a result, they all left UT after that year and were not fondly remember. It’s not fair, though, because they were among the winningest Vols ever.
