Under Johnny Majors, Tennessee football built up its Wide Receiver U reputation, putting tons of talent in the NFL from that position. Tim McGee was among many of those players, but he proved himself at the next level as well with a 10-year NFL career. Anyway, this is about what he did in college, and he was part of re-establishing Rocky Top as a national program.
After playing almost none during the 1982 season, McGee had 286 receiving yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore in 1983. However, in 1983, he was set to become one of the star receivers just as Tony Robinson was set to replace Alan Cockrell at quarterback. McGee then burst onto the scene as a star receiver for everybody to see.
In 1984, McGee had 54 catches for 809 yards and six touchdowns. When 1985 arrived, he was the go-to guy and a captain. He and Robinson led the Vols to a 3-1-1 start, including a tie with the No. 10 ranked UCLA Bruins and wins over the No. 1 ranked Auburn Tigers and No. 16 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Robinson, suffered a season-ending injury at Alabama, but that didn’t stop McGee.
Daryl Dickey finished the year, leading UT to a 9-1-2 record, SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl upset of the Miami Hurricanes to finish in the top five. For his part, McGee had an All-American campaign, catching 50 passes for 947 yards and seven touchdowns. He had over 100 yards against UCLA and Auburn and had 94 against Miami while recovering a fumble for a touchdown.
