Tennessee football’s five QBs with greatest NFL careers
Teams played for:
- New Orleans Saints: 1972-1982
Dewey Warren’s successor to continue the program that Doug Dickey had built, Bobby Scott led Tennessee football from 1968 to 1970. During that time, he won an SEC title and enjoyed a top five finish with Bill Battle in 1970, continuing the program Dickey had built up when he took over the program back in 1964.
After his pro career finished, Scott was taken by the New Orleans Saints in the 1971 NFL Draft. He then became a backup to Archie Manning. The connection was pretty funny since Manning led the Ole Miss Rebels to a blowout upset of Scott’s 1969 SEC Championship Vols team, which wrecked their chances at winning a national championship.
Anyway, as Manning’s backup, Scott did see action in 41 games throughout his career in New Orleans, and he started in 14 of them. He went 4-10 during that time, so he wasn’t too successful, but it wasn’t like Manning was more successful as a full-time starter. The Saints were just a very bad franchise, and no quarterback could have won with them back in that time.
For his career, Scott completed 237 of 500 passes for 2,781 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also had 28 interceptions, but we’ve already mentioned what the NFL and the Saints were like then. After 11 years with the Saints, Scott did play with the New Jersey Generals and the Chicago Blitz in the USFL. Also, the son of the guy he backed up in the NFL will also be on this list.
