Tennessee football’s 10 RBs with greatest NFL careers
Teams played for:
- New Orleans Saints, 2017-present
Yes, after only three years in the pros, Alvin Kamara is already one of Tennessee football’s greatest NFL running backs of all time. He’s the only guy on this list who played in Butch Jones’ spread offense, but with Joshua Dobbs being his quarterback, that system was perfect for him. Kamara had 1,977 yards from scrimmage and 24 total touchdowns in his two years on Rocky Top.
However, being severely underused dropped his draft stock, so he fell to the third round. As an all-purpose back, though, he was the perfect fir fo the New Orleans Saints, who drafted him, and the system that Sean Payton and Drew Brees run. He followed in the footsteps of Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles in that system, and he revitalized the franchise.
Kamara earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2017 as an all-purpose back with over 1,500 yards from scrimmage, including over 700 rushing yards and an average of over six yards a carry, to go along with 13 offensive touchdowns plus a kickoff return for a touchdown. He went over 1,500 yards again in 2018, and he had over 1,300 in 2019.
So in three years, Kamar has made three Pro Bowls, earned All-Pro honors and become a star. Him being this high is about how great he is, nothing about the other backs. Already, he has 2,408 career rushing yards and 4,476 yards from scrimmage to go along with 38 total touchdowns. And he may just be getting started.
