Ranking Tennessee football 2020 transfers by potential impact
Miles Jones isn’t even the only wide receiver with the last name Jones who was once a five-star and transferred from a Power Five school to Tennessee football in 2020. However, he is the least likely to actually see any action on the field this year, largely because of the Vols’ situation at his position and his situation as a transfer.
Despite losing Jauan Jennings, Marquez Callaway and Tyler Byrd, the Vols once again have a lot of people competing to start at receiver, and some of them have real experience. Seniors Josh Palmer and Brandon Johnson are both in that rotation, but then guys like Ramel Keyton could also emerge. For this year, Jones is not going to fit into that rotation.
There’s also the fact that Jones may not get an eligibility waiver. In fact, he’s least likely to get a waiver, which is why he is down on this list. If he’s able to play in 2020, he’ll have a chance to work his way into the rotation, but Jeremy Pruitt has done such a good job loading up with depth at receiver that he will still have to compete for legitimate playing time.
At 5’8″ 172 pounds, Jones is clearly going to be a slot receiver used on gadget plays. He only had two touches in Scott Frost’s spread offense with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2018, and he didn’t play in 2019. As a result, we don’t know what to expect from him. But we know for sure he won’t play this year.
