Tennessee football’s top 10 NFL WRs of all time
Teams played for:
- New Orleans Saints, 2007-2011
- San Diego Chargers, 2012
- New Orleans Saints, 2013-2014
In 2006, Robert Meachem set the single-season school record for receiving yards in a season. As Tennessee football’s go-to guy with quarterback Erik Ainge leading a revamped offense under David Cutcliffe, Meachem caught 13 passes for 1,298 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was a redshirt junior at the time and was able to leave early for the pros afterward.
The New Orleans Saints took Meachem in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Going to a pass-happy offense with Sean Payton and Drew Brees was a blessing and a curse for him. At 6’2″ 210 pounds, he’d get lots of chances to make big plays, but he’d also be one of many receivers in a deep rotation, which the Saints loved to run.
Meachem’s efforts still led to productive seasons. After missing his rookie year due to a knee injury and just 289 yards and three touchdowns in 2008, he had three straight seasons with at least five touchdowns and over 600 yards, winning a Super Bowl championship in 2009. Those were the three peak years for Meachem and enough to put him on this list.
Once the 2011 season ended, Meachem spent a year with the San Diego Chargers, but he went back to the Saints in 2013 and 2014, where he finished his career. His NFL totals included 178 receptions for 2,914 yards and 27 touchdowns, and he even had a rushing touchdown.
