Tennessee football’s top 10 NFL WRs of all time
Teams played for:
- Cincinnati Bengals, 1986-1992
- Washington Redskins, 1993
- Cincinnati Bengals, 1994
As a member of the Wide Receiver U coalition Johnny Majors put together with Tennessee football in the 1980s, Tim McGee was one of the biggest overachievers. A 5’10” 183-pound speedster, McGee was a rotational receiver in 1983, and then he had 809 yards and six touchdowns and then 947 yards and seven touchdowns in 1984 and 1985 respectively.
In 1985, McGee earned All-American honors and was a big reason the Vols withstood quarterback Tony Robinson’s season-ending injury as they won the SEC title and finished in the top five with a 9-1-2 record. McGee’s play was a huge reason for that. It translated into him becoming a first-round pick in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
McGee spnt his first seven years with the Bengals and nearly won a Super Bowl with them in 1988, when they lost on a late drive to the San Francisco 49ers. His best season was 1989, when he had 1,211 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. After those seven years, he joined the Washington Redskins in 1993, and he went back to finish his career in Cincy in 1994.
Over his nine-year career, McGee had 321 catches for 5,203 yards and 28 touchdowns. He was also the feature kickoff returner for Cincinnati in 1986, going over 1,000 yards. Simply put, his incredible college success translated into the pros despite his size, and because of that, he deserves lots of respect and clearly belongs on this list.
