6. player. Scouting Report. Corey Terry. Defensive Lineman. 1996-1998. 839. Pick Analysis

Staying on the defensive line, Corey Terry is forgotten about too often as a crucial member of Tennessee football’s 1998 national championship team. A big reason the Vols won it that year was due to their improvements on the defensive line, as Shaun Ellis and Darwin Walker proved to be better than even Jonathan Brown from the year before.

Terry, though, was the one consistent veteran on that line. Coming out of Warrenton, N.C., Terry arrived at UT from Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan. Key to the 6’3″ 246-pound defensive end’s arrival in 1996 was John Chavis, who had been promoted to defensive coordinator in 1995 and focused on speed around the edges in his 4-3 scheme, a perfect fit for Terry.

In his two years as a starter, Terry became a major contributor. He had 114 tackles, nine sacks, 21 tackles for a loss, six forced fumbles and four passes broken up during that time, helping the Vols win back to back SEC Championships and, as we mentioned the national title. Terry forced the fumble that set up the game-clinching touchdown for the Vols in the 1998 SEC Title game.

Simply put, Terry could come through in the big moments and was crucial to Phillip Fulmer’s championships. His NFL career never really panned out, as he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1999 and the New Orleans Saints in 2000, but he was a great junior college pickup for the Vols. His last two years easily earned him a spot on this list.
