Scouting Report. 1973-1976. Years in NFL: 11. Mickey Marvin. 839. Pick Analysis. 9. player

Teams played for:

  • Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, 1977-1987

Despite blocking for Condredge Holloway and being a bright spot for Tennessee football, Mickey Marvin was with a program in decline under Bill Battle during his four years with the Vols. His final year was in 1976, the year before Johnny Majors would take over as head coach and begin the long process of restoring the program to national prominence.

Marvin’s lack of team success at the college level, though, turned into the exact opposite in the NFL. In 1977, he was taken by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Oakland had just won the Super Bowl the year before and was looking to continue its success. Adding Marvin, who fit right in at 6’4″ 270 pounds, allowed them to do just that.

By his second year, Marvin settled in as the starting right guard for the Raiders. Injuries limited him to two games in 1979, but he returned in 1980 and dominated, particularly in the 1980-1981 NFL Playoffs, when he helped the team rush for over 100 yards in the AFC Championship game and in the Super Bowl while blocking Charlie Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Three years later, Marvin got them back to the Super Bowl by shutting down Joe Nash and helping Oakland rush for over 200 yards against the Seattle Seahawks. They then beat the Washington Redskins for him to win his second Super Bowl. Over his 11 years in the pros, all with the Raiders, Marvin appeared in 120 games and had 108 starts. He passed away due to ALS in 2017.
