11. Joshua Dobbs

2015 vs. No. 19 Georgia Bulldogs

Tennessee Volunteers win 38-31

436 total yards (318 passing, 118 rushing); 5 total touchdowns

We talked about Joshua Dobbs’ breakout performance against the South Carolina Gamecocks, as he set a trend of over 400 total yards and five total touchdowns with Tennessee football. Very few dual-threat quarterbacks could ever do it the way he did it, but his game against the Georgia Bulldogs in 2015 took it to another level.

At the time, a UT team that had started the year ranked in the top 25 had fallen to 2-3 despite leading by two touchdowns at one point in all of their three losses, twice entering the fourth quarter. The Georgia Bulldogs had national title hopes under Mark Richt, and they jumped out to a 24-3 lead. Calls to fire Butch Jones and bench Dobbs were louder than ever.

However, in desperation, Dobbs converted two fourth downs on late first-half drive, the latter of which was to Josh Smith, who took it to the house for a touchdown. After forcing a fumble on a kickoff return, Dobbs led another touchdown drive, and UT was shockingly only down 24-17 entering halftime.

In the second half, Dobbs turned it into a shootout. He threw for another touchdown pass and ran for two more, leading the Vols to a shocking 38-31 upset win. For his part, against a ranked team, Dobbs ended a five-game losing streak to the Dawgs and had over 430 yards. This turned around UT’s season, as they finished 9-4 and in the top 25.
