Tennessee Volunteers win 45-42 (OT)

467 total yards (301 passing; 166 rushing); 5 total touchdowns

It was the coming out party for Joshua Dobbs. After a dismal performance when he came in for the final five games of his freshman season in 2013, he was inserted into the lineup against the Alabama Crimson Tide while Tennessee football was 3-4 and losing 27-0 in Butch Jones’ second season. Dobbs cut that loss to 34-20 and became the full-time starter the next week.

That week was this game. Traveling to the South Carolina Gamecocks, UT was looking for a win to turn things around. The legend of Dobbs was born here. He had two touchdown runs in the first half to spot the Vols a 21-14 lead entering the third quarter. South Carolina, however, then scored 21 straight to go up 35-21 in the fourth quarter.

At that point, Dobbs showed his clutch gene. He threw a touchdown pass to cut it to 35-28. After South Carolina scored again, going up 42-28 with less than five minutes to go and seemingly in control, Dobbs did the unthinkable. He had a touchdown run to complete a 75-yard drive, and after a stop, he had a touchdown pass to complete an 85-yard drive with 75 seconds left.

Dobbs’ play allowed UT to go to overtime, where they won 45-42. This began a string of five-total touchdown games he would have over his career, and it turned around the Vols under Jones, as that set off a run in which they won four of their final five games to finish 7-6.
