Tennessee football: Evaluating 2021 QB commits at dead period
Top prospects
Shedeur Sanders:
- Ratings: Four-star (247Sports, ESPN); Three-star (Rivals, ESPN)
- Size: 6’1″ 160 pounds
- High School: Trinity Christian
- Hometown: Cedar Hill, Texas
This is a pipe dream in a way for Tennessee football, but the Vols would take Shedeur Sanders if they could get him. As the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, you would think that Shedeur Sanders is a dual-threat quarterback given his size at 6’1″ and the fact that his father had world-class speed. However, instead, he is a pocket passer.
That doesn’t mean Sanders doesn’t have speed. It just means he ‘s that elite from the pocket, and that’s scary. Anyway, Sanders comes out of Cedar Hill, just like Kaidon Salter. However, UT will have an uphill battle to land him. It’s clear as day that the Louisville Cardinals are far ahead of anybody else in the running for this guy. There’s no need to stop trying, though.
Noah Bodden:
- Ratings: Three-star (Unanimous)
- Size: 6’4″ 225 pounds
- High School: Christ the King
- Hometown: Middle Village, N.Y.
If the Vols are going to go for a pure drop-back passer who stands tall in the pocket in this class, they might have better luck with Noah Bodden than Shedeur Sanders. For one thing, Bodden doesn’t have any favorites, while Sanders is all but gone. Also, when it comes to pro-style quarterbacks, size matters, and Bodden has it at 6’4″ 225 pounds.
As a result, while Sanders is more highly rated across most services, there are clear reasons to target Bodden more heavily. It’s also worth noting that Middle Village is in Queens and only about 25 miles from Lodi, N.J., where Jarrett Guarantano is from. Also, new UT tight ends coach Joe Osovet coached junior college in NYC for years. So there are plenty of connections to land Bodden.
