Top elite prospects still in play

Note: These are elite prospects Tennessee football is pursuing where no schools are leading yet. As a result, we can’t say they are high on the Vols. However, we can say the Vols are as much in play for these guys as anybody on the list, which is why they are worth mentioning.

Jacquez Smith

  • Ratings: Four-star (Unanimous)
  • Size: 6’0″ 190 pounds
  • Hometown: Atlanta, Ga.
  • High School: Westlake

Sticking with the state of Georgia, Jacquez Smith doesn’t have the size of the other wideouts Jeremy Pruitt and Jim Chaney are pursuing. However, he is still a four-star, and coming out of Atlanta, Pruitt clearly has recruiting connections. As a result, with no favorites yet, Smith is a guy the Vols should go after as much as possible.

Jayden Thomas

  • Ratings: Four-star (Unanimous)
  • Size: 6’2″ 205 pounds
  • Hometown: Atlanta, Ga.
  • High School: Pace Academy

We haven’t left Atlanta for this list yet. Jayden Thomas has a bit more size than Jacquez Smith, which is why he is slightly higher rated in the Rivals rankings, although both are four-stars. Once again, there are no favorites yet, and although Thomas’ 4.63 40 in The Opening Regional of 2019 wasn’t great, he’s likely improved a lot since then. So UT should go all in on him.

Caleb Coombs

  • Ratings: Four-star (Rivals); Three-star (247Sports, ESPN)
  • Size: 5’11” 185 pounds
  • Hometown: Washington, D.C.
  • High School: St. John’s College

The DMV is a place that Pruitt shouldn’t avoid. Tennessee football’s proximity to the area, only half an hour from I-81, gives them an advantage over every other SEC school. Caleb Coombs has no leaders yet, and he could give the Vols a lot of versatility, particularly with his experience playing both sides of the ball.
