Tennessee football: Top 10 out-of-state Vols on 2020 roster
Hometown: Huntington, W. Va.
The biggest star in Tennessee football’s recruiting class in 2019, Darnell Wright took some time adjusting to offensive line play as a freshman. However, by the midway point of the season, he had become a full-time starter, and he started seven games on the year. While two were at right guard, five were at right tackle, and he appeared in 11 games.
In the process, Wright earned a spot on the Freshman All-SEC team and has generated tons of hype entering his sophomore season. As a five-star prospect who came out of Huntington High School in West Virginia, the potential is through the roof for Wright at 6’6″ 340 pounds, and he could be in contention to become the starting right tackle.
Last year, Wright didn’t arrive until Fall Camp, and he also battled a couple of minor injuries late. As a result, he earned Freshman All-SEC without the chance to show his full potential. Given what he did show, he should take a major step forward in Jim Chaney’s system this year, and he could potentially become the best blocker on a team loaded with elite blockers.
Of course, those injuries raise a bit of a question, and Wright wasn’t fully consistent down the stretch. That’s why we have him at No. 10 on this list and not higher. However, it’s safe to say he may have the best potential of anybody we are about to name on here, so pay attention to what he does throughout the season.
