Here is a look at the Tennessee football Volunteers’ quarterback situation for 2020.

Heading into last year, Tennessee football only had three scholarship quarterbacks on its depth chart and only one who had ever taken a snap in a college game. By the end of the season, all three of them had started at least one game.

Beyond that, all three of these quarterbacks started one game during the Vols’ six-game winning streak to end the season, and they all appeared in at least two of those games. As a result, the unit is much more experienced heading into this year.

In addition to three players with starting experience, Tennessee football added two commitments at the position, including one of the top prospects in the nation, and a transfer is now eligible. So the Vols appear to be in much better position than they were a year ago.

What does that mean, though, as Jeremy Pruitt enters his third year? With Jim Chaney in his second as offensive coordinator, Chris Weinke in his second as quarterbacks coach (third overall in the program) and Tee Martin in his second as receivers coach, there is stability for these quarterbacks as much as experience.

That is a big deal. Pruitt is hoping to take another step in 2020 despite key losses at receiver and on defense. The biggest way he can do that is with help from his quarterbacks, whomever ends up seeing the field.

As we get set to begin our positional previews for the Vols in 2020, we start with the signal-callers. Our post will be separated into the projected starter, the projected backups, biggest questions and a final take.

With our final take, we’ll add a few predictions on the state of the group as well. So at the most important position on the field, let’s go ahead and begin our preview of Tennessee football’s quarterback situation heading into the 2020 season.
