Projected backups

1. Kasim Hill; Redshirt junior; 6’2″ 234 pounds; Washington, D.C.

A Maryland Terrapins transfer who sat out last year, Kasim Hill has battled injuries for years. He also completed 49.4 percent of his passes in his one full season. However, the product of St. John’s College in the nation’s capital was stuck in a spread and has two wins over the Texas Longhorns to his name. With his profile, the pro-style passer should shock the world and be UT’s top backup.

2. Harrison Bailey; Freshman; 6’5″ 223 pounds; Marietta, Ga.

Coming out of Marietta High School in Georgia, Harrison Bailey was Tennessee football’s one five-star recruit in its 2020 class. He brings all the hype for the future to the program, and people are wondering if he can push Jarrett Guarantano this year. As an early enrollee, he did gain some solid experience, so watch out for him. If he doesn’t win the job, though, he might redshirt.

3. Brian Maurer; Sophomore; 6’3″ 195 pounds; Ocala, Fla.

After four starts last year, Brian Maurer only finished one game, a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. In one, he was benched, and in two others, he got hurt. The product of West Port in Florida rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns and completed 35 of 75 passes for two touchdowns and five interceptions. Bailey and Hill as pro-style guys are likely to pass him, so he should redshirt.

4. JT Shrout; Redshirt sophomore; 6’3″ 213 pounds; Santa Clarita, Calif.

While Maurer started four games, JT Shrout started twice, against the South Carolina Gamecocks and UAB Blazers. The product of Hart in California is more of a pro-style guy, but he only completed 13 of 27 passes. Now, he had one touchdown and no picks. But if he was behind Maurer last year, he’ll be behind him this year unless Maurer redshirts.

5. Jimmy Holiday; Freshman; 6’0″ 196 pounds Madison, Miss.

A three-star out of Madison High School in Mississippi, Jimmy Holiday is a speedster who ran 4.38 40. He could end up playing defensive back for Tennessee football, and like Bailey, he was an early enrollee. However, he’s certainly not going to see the field this year. Holiday is young and doesn’t maintain continuity since he’s not a pro-style guy, so he’s another one who may want to redshirt.

Other quarterbacks on the roster

Michael Bittner; Sophomore; 6’2″ 214 pounds; Cincinnati, Ohio

Steven Orr; Sophomore; 6’2″ 201 pounds; Davenport, Okla.

Spencer Smith; Sophomore; 6’1″ 200 pounds; Germantown, Tenn.
