7. Chuck Webb: 294 rushing yards in a game

1989 vs. Ole Miss Rebels

If you want proof of how great of a running back Chuck Webb was in his freshman year with Tennessee football, he’s No. 1 and No. 2 on the Vols all-time list for rushing yards in a game. This was his breakout game. At the time, he was having to take over because of the dismissal or Reggie Cobb, a feature running back, in the middle of the season.

That made room for Webb, who may have gone down as the best running back in UT history were it not for a career-ending injury early into the 1990 season. However, in this game, he set the school record for 294 rushing yards against the Ole Miss Rebels.

The closest to this record is, well, Webb himself, when he had 250 yards in the Vols’ Cotton Bowl win over the Arkansas Razorbacks later that year. Behind his two games is Tony Thompson, who rushed for 248 yards against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Not only is nobody close to Webb, nobody is going to have the chances Webb had to catch him either. Again, because of the dismissal of Cobb, the coaches had to make Webb the sole running back with limited depth while they had multiple All-American starting on the offensive line.

All of those things have to happen if a player is going to rush for that many yards in a game. They need an elite offensive line, they need a great passing attack as well that defenses have to respect, and they need to be the sole feature back.
