In 2018, Josh Palmer was actually second on the team in receiving yards. As the No. 3 wideout, the Canadian has who was relatively new to football when he joined the Vols has dramatically developed, and over the past two years, he has 941 yards and three touchdowns.
Now, the graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. has the chance to be the No. 1 receiver. He has proven himself time and time again, and this is his chance. Palmer has shown signs of being a breakout player, so watch out for what he does.
Brandon Johnson; Redshirt senior; 6’2″ 202 pounds; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
While Josh Palmer has been highly productive for Tennessee football over the past two years, people may forget that Brandon Johnson was the guy who actually led the team in receiving in 2017. Amidst a slew of talent, he decided to take a redshirt this past year. It should pay off.
The product of American Heritage High School in South Florida did have 93 yards last season before redshirting. He has proven himself to be a valuable wideout, and with lots of experience, this could be his year to emerge alongside Palmer.
Projected slot receiver
Velus Jones Jr.; Redshirt senior; 6’0″ 202 pounds; Saraland, Ala.
A graduate transfer from the USC Trojans, Velus Jones Jr. came out of Saraland High School in Alabama and initially committed out west to join Tee Martin. Well, now he is reunited with Martin, and he is a speedy return specialist who could be the perfect slot guy.
We’ll get to Jones as a return specialist later. What’s clear is that he can definitely play the slot when given the chance. In 2018, he had 24 receptions for 266 yards and scored two total touchdowns. Playing in Jim Chaney’s system could allow him to thrive.
