Tennessee basketball’s top 10 shots in history
6. Corey Allen and-one
1993 vs. Kentucky
There weren’t many highlights for Tennessee basketball under Wade Houston. His son Allan Houston becoming an All-American was one of the few ones, and there were a couple of upsets, including Houston hitting a game-winner one year to beat the No. 4 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. However, a win over the Kentucky Wildcats by Houston’s teammate was more memorable.
At this time, the Vols were 11-13 and really had nothing to play for. Kentucky, however, entered Thompson-Boling Arena with a No. 2 ranking under Rick Pitino and a 20-2 record. In a back and forth game, Kentucky was clinging to a 77-74 three-point lead with five seconds left.
Pitino made the smart decision to foul Houston, meaning he would have to make the first, miss the second and hope for an offensive rebound to tie. Well, Houston, who had a great day in scoring 27 points, did just that.
On the miss, the Vols got lucky with a chance at a tip-in, but that was missed too. Somehow, though, the ball landed in the hands of Corey Allen, and he put up a shot while being fouled by Jamal Mashburn. The shot went in.
Allen, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds that day, then sank his free throw to shockingly put UT ahead 78-77 with one and a half seconds left. The Vols held on thanks to that old-fashioned three-point play by Allen, and it remains one of the most unlikely sequences of events ever in an upset win.
This was actually part of multiple upset wins for UT late, as two games earlier, they had upset the No. 13 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on the road. However, they were too inconsistent and still finished 13-17 in a bad year.
