Several Tennessee football Volunteers players joined the movement amid COVID-19.

With all the growing talk of canceling the college football season due to coronavirus, Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence spoke out in favor of playing and, along with Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields, launched the hashtag #WeWantToPlay on Twitter. Several Tennessee football players then followed suit.

Multiple Vols on both sides of the ball were among players across the country using that hashtag, making the case for playing the season, however it needs to happen. Even some coaches across the country joined the players in this hashtag.

Jarrett Guarantano, Henry To’o To’o, Alontae Taylor, Darel Middleton, Brian Maurer, Trevon Flowers, Velus Jones Jr. and Aaron Beasley were among the Tennessee football players to tweet out the hashtag. Guarantano got it started Sunday night, and the other players followed suit.

Whether or not these players are able to make an impact is a different story, but many of them make a compelling case about being safer on campus, with medical staffs, rather than back home. Even if fans aren’t in the stands, they should be able to pull this off.

A bubble may not be a bad idea, even if it’s a bit trickier since it would have to last an entire season and not a couple of months. However, if schools hold fully-virtual options, there may be ways for the players to figure this out.

However, if the NCAA and the SEC is not proactive, then things could turn disastrous. The best way for players to play is for leaders to actually come up with a feasible plan ahead of time that can be worked out, and they have waited until the last minute in many cases.

It’s clear Tennessee football fans and players want a season, and they should. Seeing players join in is great news for Rocky Top as well. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t kinks to work out, though, and officials need to do that.
