Quarterback Kaidon Salter plans to join the Tennessee football Volunteers early.

If things do return to normal, Tennessee football will have a head start on finding its replacement for fifth-year senior Jarrett Guarantano next year. The Vols already will have Harrison Bailey, Brian Maurer, J.T. Shrout and Jimmy Holiday for spring practice.

Well, they will also be adding Kaidon Salter. A four-star dual-threat on Rivals and 247Sports after standing out at the Elite 11 Finals earlier this summer, Salter announced he will be an early enrollee. The 6’1″ 185-pound product of Cedar Hill High School in Cedar Hill, Texas committed to Rocky Top back on May 10.

Assuming Salter follows through on his commitment, he will be joining both Bailey and Holiday from this past year and Maurer from 2019 as quarterbacks who were early enrollees to Tennessee football. Salter announced the news on Twitter.

With the arrival of Salter, Rocky Top should have a great quarterback battle next year. Jeremy Pruitt, Jim Chaney and Chris Weinke will have a collection of guys with different playing styles, different levels of experience and different sizes to evaluate.

In the process, they will have all of spring practice and fall camp to name a starter. With three drop-back passers in Bailey, Maurer and Shrout along with two dual-threat quarterbacks in Salter and Holiday, Chaney will have a ton to work with.

There is also lots of hype behind the guy. Shrout will have the big arm and the most experience. Maurer will have the zip on the ball and be just behind in experience. Bailey will be the total package as a five-star pro-style guy. Holiday brings world-class speed as an athlete who ran a 4.38 40. Salter brings his quickness in the pocket.

Simply put, Salter being an early enrollee gives the coaches plenty of time to find Tennessee football’s guy to replace Guarantano. Knowing how Pruitt operates, though, he still probably won’t name a starter until one day before the 2021 opener.
