Tennessee football: Ranking all SEC coaches for 2020
Record at Texas A&M: 17-9 (9-7); Overall record: 100-32
This may seem unpopular, but we can’t judge Jimbo Fisher on his one national championship with the Florida State Seminoles in 2013 and three straight ACC Championships from 2012 to 2014. Since then, he’s been mediocre at best, both at FSU and with the Texas A&M Aggies. As a result, we have to put him down here for now.
To be fair, Fisher is still a top five coach because of that championship. It bought him some credibility, but he’s gone 5-6, 9-4 and 8-5 in his past three years, the last two of which were in College Station, Texas. Given the amount he’s getting paid, Aggie fans expect more from him. He was supposed to take them to the next level once and for all.
Now, we should also note that A&M had a brutal schedule last year, but given what Fisher was paid to do, he should have A&M on the same level of the teams they faced to make that schedule brutal. Matching what Jeremy Pruitt, a coach with no track record before 2018, did with Tennessee football, which was in much worse shape than A&M when he took over, is inexcusable.
With an elite quarterback and lots of attrition at other programs, Fisher has the chance to redeem himself and move back up the list this year. The 10-game SEC only schedule, which now incidentally includes the Vols, will make things tougher, but that’s no different for any other team. So it’s time for Fisher to prove himself.
