Tennessee football: Ranking all SEC coaches for 2020
Record at Georgia: 44-12 (25-7)
Winning three straight SEC East titles and coming one play away from winning the national title is enough to keep Kirby Smart up here, and maybe this is an overreaction to drop him. The guy has the Georgia Bulldogs dominating their division on a yearly basis, and keeping them in national title contention every year should count for something.
However, in a prisoner of the moment mode, we have to point out that Smart appears to have UGA stuck in a stagnant position despite elite recruiting. Losing Jim Chaney to Tennessee football may not have helped matters, and now losing Sam Pittman to the Arkansas Razorbacks could make it worse. But at some point he’s got to move past knocking on the door.
Now, to be fair, this level of consistency has him ahead of Jimbo Fisher at the moment despite him winning no national titles. Smart has won an SEC title more recently than Fisher has won any conference title, and he’s been much more successful in SEC play in general. As a result, he’s still high up on this list, even if he did drop one spot.
With a ton of talent back, this may be the year UGA does break through and win the title. The Dawgs have everything in place, and if they do it, Smart will move up to No. 2 on this list behind his mentor, Nick Saban. Unless he collapses, he’s not likely to move too far out of this spot in the future. Smart is at least consistent.
