Tennessee football: Ranking all SEC coaches for 2020
Record at South Carolina: 26-25 (15-17); Overall record: 54-46
Joining Derek Mason on the hot seat in the SEC is Will Muschamp. Just like he did with the Florida Gators, he’s seen a drop-off after a surprisingly good second year. Last year’s 4-8 campaign included heartbreaking losses to the North Carolina Tar Heels and Appalachian State Mountaineers nullified what was a significant upset over the Georgia Bulldogs.
Muschamp’s win over Georgia and his undefeated record against Tennessee football before last year are the biggest positives on his resume so far. However, it was obvious that S.C. was taking advantage of a very easy schedule when it went 9-4 in 2017, as it only beat one SEC team to finish the season with a winning record that year, the 7-6 Missouri Tigers.
In fact, there are many reasons to see what Jeremy Pruitt has done with the Vols and worry that his profile is similar to Muschamp’s. Pruitt had a strong finish to his second season by taking advantage of what was on his team’s schedule, and he’s now looking to further prove himself. Given the fact that this is the second time Muschamp has done that, it looks like a trend now.
Regardless, his seat is likely just going to remain hot heading into 2021. Again, he’s got to deal with a 10-game SEC-only schedule, and that will likely give him and Mason mulligans. Still, they aren’t likely to do much to move up this list anyway, which is why they’ll just repeat the situation they’re in heading into next year.
