Tennessee football: Ranking all SEC coaches for 2020
Record at Tennessee: 13-12 (7-9)
After a strong finish his second year as head coach of the Tennessee football program, Jeremy Pruitt is up three spots from where we had him last year. He probably would have fallen to the bottom if we judged the program through mid-October, when it had fallen to 2-5 after an 0-2 start that descended to 1-4.
However, after those first two losses at home to Group of Five schools, Pruitt didn’t have a bad loss the rest of the way. He then hit above par by helping the team secure upsets over both the Kentucky Wildcats and Missouri Tigers on the road before putting together an epic comeback bowl win to finish 8-5 and on a six-game winning streak.
Although he did take advantage of a lighter schedule, Pruitt did such a good job keeping the team together that he moved up a good bit. The mess he inherited is made clear when you consider that he was not favored in any of his first 15 SEC games but still managed to win six of them. UT’s first SEC game as a favorite with him was against the Vanderbilt Commodores last year.
This year, with a 10-game SEC-only schedule, Pruitt has more pressure on him. He’s got to prove that he’s not Will Muschamp, whose second years tend to be flashes in the pan. Well, the Vols and South Carolina Gamecocks open up the season against each other in Columbia, S.C., so we’ll be able to find out pretty quickly whether or not Pruitt can build off his program’s success.
