Tennessee football: Ranking all SEC coaches for 2020
Record at Kentucky: 44-44 (20-36)
We said we’d judge coaches by the success they had relative to their programs. Mark Stoops has done an amazing job with the Kentucky Wildcats. This may be a harder program to succeed at than even the Vanderbilt Commodores, and Stoops is doing it at a time when the SEC East is seeing a resurgence with the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs.
Last year, Stoops was supposed to have a rebuilding year. He got UK to a 10-win season and a top 25 finish in 2018, and after losing a ton of defensive talent, questions arose as to whether or not this team could make a bowl game. Then quarterback Terry Wilson suffered a season-ending injury early on.
All Stoops did was move Lynn Bowden over to quarterback and manage to orchestrate another eight-win season, going 8-5 and winning his final four games. One thing remained consistent, though, was losing to Tennessee football. Still, it’s unfair that we had to drop him one spot with that success, but the arrival of one coach and success of another made it impossible to ignore.
However, he still has gotten the program to four straight bowl games, saw a top 25 finish in 2018 and has it entering 2020 with very high expectations. Whether or not those expectations hold with the new scheduling format remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say Stoops has done an amazing job with what he has and the program he’s working with.
