The Tennessee basketball Volunteers’ non-conference slate is changing a bit.

As the pandemic rages on, college basketball is now trying to deal with how to handle the situation. It looks like beyond just the scheduling, locations are about to be altered for a couple of  Tennessee basketball non-conference matchups.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that the Charleston Classic, initially scheduled for Nov. 19, 20 and 22 in South Carolina, and the Jimmy V Classic, initially scheduled for Dec. 8 in New York City, are among seven early season events moving to Florida. The Vols are set to play in both of them this year.

Other tournaments reportedly moving are the Preseason NIT, Champions Classic, the Wooden Legacy, the Myrtle Beach Invitational and the Diamond Head Classic. All seven will take place in Orlando, Fla. plus the Orlando Invitational. Rothstein tweeted out the news Tuesday.

Usually played in Charleston, S.C., the Charleston Classic hosts eight teams every year. This year, Tennessee basketball is set to compete with the Charleston Cougars, Florida State Seminoles, Houston Cougars, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Penn State Nittany Lions, Seton Hall Pirates and VCU Rams in the event.

Meanwhile, the Vols are scheduled to play the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the Jimmy V Classic, which usually takes place at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, N.Y., while the Rutgers Scarlet Knights face the Baylor Bears in the other game of the doubleheader. This is a rematch between UT and Gonzaga from 2018, when the Vols upset Mark Few’s No. 1 ranked team.

Such a move makes 2020 the second straight year Rick Barnes’ team plays a November tournament in Florida. In 2019, the Vols played in the Emerald Coast Classic, which was hosted by Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Fla., a city on the panhandle.

In that tournament, Tennessee basketball lost to the Florida State Seminoles but then beat the VCU Rams thanks to a last-second shot by Lamonte Turner. That FSU loss was their first loss of the 2019-2020 season.
