Tennessee football: Top 10 players Vol have to face in 2020
Senior; San Antonio, Texas
We’re sticking with the quarterbacks on this one, and we may be controversial here. Kyle Trask was more efficient than Kellen Mond in many ways last year, but Jimbo Fisher puts a lot more on Mond to be able to handle, and that’s why we rank him higher. Lots of Trask’s success is more attributable to Mullen’s system, not quarterbacks developing under Mullen.
Anyway, one of many products of IMG Academy in Florida, the 6’3″ 217-pound veteran has been one of the most recognizable quarterbacks in the SEC each of the past two years. Unlike Trask, he has a lot of mobility, which makes him even more dangerous.
Last year, Mond completed 258 of 419 passes for 2,897 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He had a 61.6 percent completion rate and averaged just under seven yards a carry. However, he also had 501 rushing yards, averaging four yards a carry, and eight more rushing touchdowns, showing his mobility.
This year, Mond and Fisher are expected to lead the Texas A&M Aggies back to prominence as a powerhouse program. Them being added to Tennessee football’s schedule is part of what made things so much more brutal for the Vols.
Of course, Jeremy Pruitt is familiar with Fisher handling elite quarterbacks. His former boss was coaching Jameis Winston to a Heisman Trophy year as he ran the Florida State Seminoles’ defense en route to the national title during the 2013 season. That may help, but he has to be ready.
