Lost to Tennessee Volunteers 31-27

There were some positives for Will Muschamp’s South Carolina Gamecocks in their loss to Tennessee football. Collin Hill made plenty of good decisions, Shi Smith looked dominant in the slot, and Nick Muse emerged at tight end. With the arrival of Mike Bobo and a decent passing attack, this team could dramatically improve on its 4-8 campaign.

However, South Carolina still failed to stop UT that much, as it allowed 24 points that could have been 35 points if not for numerous errant passes. On top of that, there were key mistakes throughout the day. The Gamecocks did not protect well, and they had two turnovers. That ended up being the difference in the game for them.

As a result, this team still has work to do. It doesn’t look like things are about to get better either. Over the next four games, South Carolina has to face the Florida Gators, Vanderbilt Commodores, Auburn Tigers and LSU Tigers, meaning 1-4 is likely on the table before they face the Texas A&M Aggies, another team that could be dangerous despite what happened this past weekend.

Simply put, this team’s schedule is brutal. There are some positives, and correcting just a few mistakes could lead to a turnaround, but there’s just not enough time to correct them right now. They are facing the gauntlet immediately, and it’s the worst draw possible. Expect them to be down here in the SEC Power Rankings for a while.
