Tennessee football in top half of SEC Power Rankings after Week 4
Lost to Auburn Tigers 29-13
Honestly, there’s a case to make for the Kentucky Wildcats being higher. They were a horrible call away from being in this game, when they clearly scored a touchdown in the first half but were ruled short and then had a turnover. Had that not happened, this would have been a completely different game for Mark Stoops’ team in the second half.
Still, they should have recovered better, and they didn’t. The Auburn Tigers did cover in this game, and Kentucky does not look like it has the same offense with Terry Wilson Jr. healthy and Lynn Bowden Jr. gone. Even with its elite offensive line, it had far too many issues and made way too many mistakes throughout the day. That’s concerning with an elite line and veteran quarterback.
Now, the third-place spot in the East is clearly down to Kentucky, the South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee football, but UK did not look up to the challenge to be the East challenger this year to the two top dogs over the weekend. They did move the ball, but three turnovers is a concern. This team can’t make those mistakes going forward.
Showing flashes, though, is why we have them over other 0-1 teams in our SEC Power Rankings. Up next, they have the chance to right the ship with a home game against the Ole Miss Rebels. Stoops facing Lane Kiffin is a battle of great minds on defense and offense respectively. This is a game UK has to win.
