Recognition for multiple Tennessee Vols and Mizzou week lead our Sept. 29 Volunteers news.

The Tennessee Vols’ huge win at the South Carolina Gamecocks is in the rearview mirror, and now they are looking ahead to the Missouri Tigers. However, Monday was a day filled with aftermath stories related to the weekend.

Our morning update on Rocky Top involves players in football and soccer being recognized by the SEC for their performances over the weekend. We’re going to address both of those individuals plus things related to UT as a program.

Included in those things are a typical Monday press conference, news about the time for another game and another coach speaking at a weekly event. Simply put, there’s plenty for us to cover, and we’ll actually start with the press conference.

Jeremy Pruitt addresses media ahead of Missouri – Matthew Ray, SI.com

Following the Tennessee Vols football win at the South Carolina Gamecocks, Jeremy Pruitt addressed the media Monday ahead of the Missouri Tigers. Here’s a bit of what he said about this Saturday’s home opener against the Missouri Tigers.

"“If you look at Missouri, just watching the game they played against Alabama, they won the second half. I know the game didn’t start off the way they wanted to, but if you watch how they play, they played extremely hard. They were aggressive. They created problems in all three phases. So it will be a tremendous challenge for us as we move forward.”"

Brian Niedermeyer speaks at Knoxville QB club – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

During a Zoom call, Tennessee football inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer spoke at the Knoxville Quarterback Club. He touted all the inside linebackers, but here’s what he said about Henry To’o To’o’s performance at the South Carolina Gamecocks.

"“We all have some things to work on. But Henry has been a great leader, and he leads by example. But he also speaks up and demands things from within the position group. He’s been everything that I’ve asked for and more, so I enjoy coaching him.”"

Two possible times for Vols at Georgia Bulldogs – Lucas Panzica, VolsWire.com

When the Tennessee Vols football team visits the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 10, they will either face off on ESPN at Noon ET or CBS at 3:30 p.m. ET. Tennessee football’s Twitter account revealed the two possibilities.

"A decision likely hangs on how each team performs in Week 2, as Tennessee will host Missouri and No. 7 Auburn travels to No. 4 Georgia. Georgia was slow out the gate Saturday, but recovered in the second half to open the season with a 37-10 win over Arkansas."

Deandre Johnson named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week – UTSports

After two and a half sacks at the South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee Vols football senior edge rusher Deandre Johnson was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week. In addition to his sacks, Johnson had the hurry that forced the pick-six to Henry To’o To’o.

"The recognition marks Johnson’s first collegiate honor and the 12th occasion a Vol has earned the distinction. The senior has appeared in 32 games for the Orange & White, making four starts."

Jaida Thomas SEC Soccer Freshman of the Week – SECSports

Coming off a 1-0 win over the No. 10 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, Tennessee Lady Vols soccer forward Jaida Thomas was named SEC Freshman of the Week. Thomas was responsible for the sole goal scored in that game.

"The result marked Tennessee’s first win over Vanderbilt since 2013 and UT’s first win over a top-10 opponent since Oct. 21, 2018. Thomas, a redshirt-freshman also led the Vols with three shots and two shots on goal against the Commodores during her first match at Regal Soccer Stadium."
