At 2-0, the Tennessee football Volunteers still have something to prove in our SEC Power Rankings.

Everybody on Rocky Top is thrilled that Tennessee football has a 2-0 record, but how does that record stack up against the rest of the SEC? With still very little to go on two weeks into the season, we’re at least getting somewhat of a picture of the contenders.

This week’s SEC Power Rankings saw a few dramatic movements given a couple of upsets that happened over the weekend, one of which was a major upset. It’s making this 10-game SEC-only schedule one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory early on.

When it comes to Tennessee football, there are positives with the way they won their game in such dominating fashion. However, there are a few questions as well, and both are playing factors in our current rankings.

As usual, our power rankings emphasize a few things. Record and strength of schedule matter the most. Recency is also a factor, and if all else fails this early on, we are then able to go to margin of victory to determine which teams are better.

With four 2-0 teams, six 1-1 teams and four 0-2 teams, the picture for now is much more clear than last week. For instance, we had to attribute last year’s finish slightly to those rankings. This week, however, last year and upcoming projections will have no impact on the rankings.

Yes, that means the 2020 season is in full swing. On Saturday, two of the 2-0 teams will face off, and two of the 0-2 teams will face off, meaning we’ll have an even better chance to separate the teams based on what they have done.

Of course, another round of upsets could also make it even more complicated. What is it looking like right now? Let’s go ahead and break it down after a thrilling week. This is where Tennessee football stands in our SEC Power Rankings following Week 5 of the 2020 season.
